Surface to surface?
I’ve been wondering about these “surface” devices, and will they ever become a part of the average persons home as a desktop computer has.
There is a great article over at cultofmac.com stating that:
You’ll use it tilted at an angle on your desk like a drafting table. Or, you’ll tilt it up for TV or presentations, or flat for using it as a table. Or you’ll use it as a coffee table or a kitchen counter top. The point is: You’ll use it.
But for me, I still can’t quite see it.
Maybe I am not being open minded enough but I do see there being a lot issues with it. Sure that looks like ‘fun’, swirling around some stuff on a surface, but will I actually pay for what I can imagine will be a very expensive table. Which no doubt my kids (and me) will spill stuff on, leave things on or bump into. I like the iPad as I see it as my ‘snuggle’ device, I can curl up with it to play games, read articles, update my websites, plan my day etc.
These large tables, unless they can offer some amazing ideas for usage, I’m wondering if these will have the same fate as the Segway. How can we design something for this device that will make it a necessity, or in some way a desirable item. Or how can we break away from how we traditionally see media and create completely new and unseen ways to have interaction.
I really like how now the term ‘personal computing’ really has become that. I have my personal device on me at all hours and can do all the essential things I need to. This seems an amazing innovation to bring the world of the Internet into your pocket. I see that as a far more advanced and exciting prospect than a big table.
Anyway, it’s worth thinking about, but I still see this as missing the mark somehow.
